Mary Helen Leath

“The Nearest Thing To The Love of God Is The Love of a Mother’s Heart” Mary Helen Leath, the daughter of the late Wade and Ethel Lewis Brown, was born September 4, 1931 in Lynchburg, Virginia. She departed this life on Friday, January 16, 2026 after a lengthy illness. She was a resident of Stamford for most of her life. Mary was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church for many years and through the years she served under several ministerial leaders; Reverend Charles Sargeant, Reverend Charles M. Franklin & Reverend Robert W. Perry. In addition to being a devoted parishioner, she worked for many years in the church office first under the guidance of Helen Hubbard and continued for many more years thereafter. Mom enjoyed her church, and she was also a member of the UBC choir. Out of church she believed in caring and supporting children who were intellectually and developmentally disabled. There were many occasions she would invite several children to our home to spend the holiday season. Mom loved bowling and was actually very good. She participated in a local bowling league and faithfully attended every week. Mary is survived by her beloved children, Vanessa Jackson, of Houston, TX, Allen M. Leath, III of Bridgeport, CT and Aleta Leath of Washington State. Along with a host of extended family members, cousins, cousins of cousins, cousins of cousins of cousins! The list goes on. She was predeceased by her husband. Allen M. Leath, Jr., and her son Steven Leath. She was also predeceased by sister, Arita May Ingram of Stamford, brothers, James Brown of Stamford, William Brown of Lynchburg, VA, Herman Brown of Fayetteville, N.C. and Frank Brown of Philadelphia, PA. Mary has three grandchildren, Steven Leath of Washington State Jaime Leath of Trumbull, CT. Marlene Jackson of Houston, TX along with three great grandchildren, Samantha Leath of Washington State, Mikey Leath of Trumbull and Zoe Leath of Trumbull. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, followed by a service of celebration at 11:00 am at Union Baptist Church, 805 Newfield Ave., Stamford, CT. Rev. Dr. Andre L. Bradley, officiant. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Stamford.
