Theodore "Teddy" Craig Jr.

Theodore “Sonny” Craig , affectionately known as "Teddy or Craig," was born on March 12, 1942, in Meridian, Mississippi, to the late Theodore Craig Sr. and Hilda Craig. As the eldest of five children, Teddy’s journey took him from the warmth of Mississippi to Detroit, Michigan, to New Cannan, CT in 1952 before he finally settled in Stamford, Connecticut, where he built a life defined by love, laughter, and lasting connections. Teddy met the love of his life, Phyllis T. Craig, while he attended J.M Wright Technical School and she was a student at Stamford High. Phyllis’s mother was initially wary because Teddy did not attend church, so to earn her trust and be able to take Phyllis on a date, in 1964 he joined Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church and became an usher. In 1967 Teddy and Phyllis married and were later blessed with two children, Jeffery and Courtney. After serving faithfully for many years, he retired from the senior usher board as an honorary member. Teddy was a man of immense work ethic, serving at Stamford Hospital, Volkswagen, and Con Diesel. He eventually dedicated 23 years of service to the City of Stamford, where he remained until his well-deserved retirement. To know Teddy was to know a man who lived life at full throttle. Whether he was riding his Harley Davidson—a passion he shared with his father—racing remote-control cars, or joining in on a line dance, Teddy brought energy to everything he did. In addition, you could also find Teddy at the park, playing his blues and hanging out with the guys. He was a traveler at heart, embarking on annual vacations with Phyllis and their dear longtime friends. Perhaps his most famous trait, however, was his gift of gab. A "five-minute" greeting on the street would effortlessly turn into a 45-minute storytelling session. He was the family “historian”, always behind the lens of a camera, making sure every precious moment was captured forever. On July 7, 2026, Teddy was called home. His family finds comfort in imagining the Lord saying, "Son, you have been an amazing husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend. Now, it is time to rest." Teddy was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest sister, Mary. His legacy of joy and storytelling will be carried on by his devoted wife of 59 years, Phyllis; his children, Jeffery (Li’Kia) of Stamford, CT and Courtney of Stamford, CT; his siblings Timothy Craig (Ceclia) of New Canaan, CT; Shirley Gibbs of Charlotte, NC and Jacqueline Becton of Temple Hills, MD. His grandchildren Joshua, Janiya, Aarron, Marquise, Tear, Jayda and Brooklyn all of Stamford, CT. Great-Grandchild Luis Angel, Jr of Bridgeport, CT. His in-laws, Apostle Cheryl Jones of TX, Charles Taylor Jr of FL, Larry Taylor of CT, Wendy Spearman of CT, Tyrone Spearman of CT, Joyce, Marty, Darin of PA, Toya of NV; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his voice, his camera, and his adventurous spirit. Services will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, located at 29 Grove St. Stamford, CT. Viewing and visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M., followed by the funeral service at 12:00 P.M. Interment will be private.
