Mildred Thelma Cummings

Mildred Thelma Mitchell Cummings, affectionately known as MeMe, passed peacefully on February 14, 2021. She was born in Tillman, South Carolina on May 5, 1916 to William O. & Julia P. Mitchell. Although born and raised in South Carolina, MeMe spent time living in Florida, Connecticut and Texas. MeMe began her employment journey in the mid-1930s at Woods’ Cafeteria in Hardeeville, South Carolina. Working at a small hotel in Miami, Florida was the next stop on the journey. In Stamford, Connecticut, MeMe became a long-time employee with Clairol. After 16 ½ years of working at Clairol, MeMe retired on June 1, 1981. Christian values were instilled in MeMe at an early age by her mother. It was at Arm Oak Baptist Church that she came to know the Lord for herself. While a member of Arm Oak Baptist Church, she was an active member and sang in the youth choir during her teenage years. Her commitment to be an active member of her church continued even after she joined Union Baptist Church in the mid-1960s. At Union Baptist Church, she was a member of the Senior Choir and Willing Workers and the Autumn Gold Senior Program. Her faithful study and attendance led her to be recognized as one of the church’s “Mothers”. Over the years, MeMe developed a love for walking, shopping, gardening, traveling, word search puzzles, participating in programs for seniors and going to see musicals. She also loved the simple things in life like spending good times with family and friends. Those who knew her appreciated her firm yet quick-witted personality and will remember her distinct and infectious laugh. MeMe is survived by her nieces and nephews - Margaret Sessoms, Eugene Mills Jr., Elliott Gray Jr. (Carolyn), Mildred Bradley, Bernard Mitchell (Margurita), several grand nieces and grand nephews, several great grand nieces and great grand nephews, and a host of other family and special friends. MeMe is predeceased by her siblings Geneva Mitchell, Norman Mitchell, Herman Mitchell, Isabel Mitchell Mills, Lawrence Mitchell, Clyde Mitchell, Eunice Mitchell Gray as well as her niece and nephew – Deloris Gray Baskin and Johnel Baskin and nephews Norman Mitchell Jr. and Oscar Mitchell. Visitation will be held Saturday, February 27th, 2021 from 10:00AM - 11:00AM followed by a service of celebration at 11:00AM at Graves Medley Funeral Services, 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford, CT. with Rev. Leroy G. Parker from New Hope Baptist Church in Danbury, CT officiating and Rev Dr. Robert W. Perry of Union Baptist Church 805 Newfield Ave. Stamford, CT. Eulogist. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park, Stamford, CT.
