Mary Hilda Craig

Mary Hilda Craig Mary H. Craig, a resident of New Canaan, passed on Friday, August 29, 2025. She was born on October 3, 1959, to Theodore and Hilda Craig. Mary attended New Canaan public schools and graduated from New Canaan High in 1978. Mary lived a life of courage, determination, and deep faith as she faced extraordinary medical challenges with grace and humility. Mary worked in customer service, was a medical transcriber, and had other entry-level assignments before actualizing her strong creative mindset. Mary became an entrepreneur and established her own company, Private Collection Peau de Soie, a successful millinery, while pursuing her other passion–education. In 2011, she received an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Connecticut State Community College (formerly known as Norwalk Community College). While there, she was on the Dean’s List, recognized for academic excellence by the L.E.A.P. Program, received the Woman of Promise Award for leadership and courage, and was inducted into the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest honor society for two-year colleges. Mary continued her education journey at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, with a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice in 2013 and a Master’s in Criminal Justice in 2015. Mary’s consistent academic excellence was further evidenced by a Dean’s Leadership Award and induction into the Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society, the only nationally recognized honor society specifically for students in criminal justice. Family and friends remember Mary as kind, fun-loving, smart, a great storyteller with an “infectious” laugh, and a cook! Although Mary did not have children of her own, the lives of her nieces and nephews were profoundly touched by their aunt’s gentle, nurturing spirit. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Theodore and Hilda Craig of New Canaan, CT. She is survived by sisters, Jacqueline Becton (Samuel, Deceased) of White Plains, MD, and Shirley Gibb of Charlotte, NC; and brothers, Timothy Craig (Cecelia) of New Canaan and Theodore Craig, Jr. (Phyllis) of Stamford, CT; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025; doors open at 10:30 a.m. with Service at 11:00 a.m. at Community Baptist Church, 174 Cherry Street, New Canaan, followed by a brief graveside ceremony at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan; a repast follows at the church.
