    Leon Melvert Shepard

    July 30, 1947 - March 25, 2022

    LIFE PROFILE LEON MELVERT SHEPARD, affectionately known as (POPSEY), a longtime resident of Stamford, CT passed away peacefully, at the age of 74 on March 25, 2022. He was born July 30, 1947 in Williamston, NC to the late James Cecil and Leora Shepard. He was educated in the public schools in Williamston, NC until his family relocated to Stamford, CT where he continued his education. Over the years, Leon found his desire and passion in the field of cosmetology. In pursuing his passion he attended the Leon Institute of Hair Design under the teaching of Mrs. Hattie Clayburn. Upon passing the state examination he received his state licenses. Leon was employed by Roy Barbershop, and Superior Barbers for many years as a barber/hairdresser until he became ill. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Leon was dedicated to his family and friends, whom he touched with his helpful spirit. He will be truly missed by all. Leon loved sports and was active in baseball, bowling, basketball, and jai-alai. One of Leon's favorite places was spending time on the golf course; he enjoyed a great moment of pride when he made his first hole in one! He enjoyed playing pool, cards, and many other activities. Leon also enjoyed reading the book of the month through the Ferguson Library South End Book Club. He leaves to cherish his memories His devoted wife Rev. Mary Shepard; three sons, Leon Melvert Shepard, Jr., Jermaine Shepard (Valdete) and Terrence Shepard; 14 grandchildren; five sisters Betty Pharr (Benny), Evangelist Bonita Shepard, Rev. Dr. Sandra Jackson (Rueben), Minister Carlean Govan, Burnell Smalls (Pastor Milledge); one brother Curtis Shepard; five sister-in-laws, Robin Shepard (Barry), Anne Shepard (James), Deacon Margaret McClintock (George), Elizabeth Forbes (Joseph), Mamie Rice, Shirley Crudup; brother in laws, James Crudup, Charles Crudup (Joyce), Bennie Crudup, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, goddaughters, friends, special friends and to all who loved him. Besides his parents Leon is predeceased by his precious granddaughter, Brelynne Shepard, brothers, James Shepard, Barry Shepard, mother/father in law, James and Pattie Crudup, brother in laws, Rueben Jackson, Benny Pharr, George McClintock and Joseph Forbes. Visitation will be held on Friday April 1, 2022 from 10:00AM - 11:00AM followed by a service of celebration at 11:00AM at Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 29 Grove St., Stamford, CT. Officiating Rev. Dr. Joseph G. Ford. Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.
