Edith J. Smith-Gibson Edith affectionately known as Mrs. Ede was born in Hardeeville, SC on September 8th,1933. She is predeceased by her biological Mother Inez Ford, and honorable Mother, Alice Saxon. On September 4th, 2023, God called on his daughter a few days before her 90th Birthday! In God We Trust Edith was born and raised in Hardeeville, SC., as a young adult, she moved to Stamford, CT where she resided for more than 60 years. She worked and retired from JM Wright Technical High School in the late 80’s and continued to work as a home health Aide even as a Senior Citizen herself. She was an avid Bowler and member of a Women’s traveling team, she played and visited many different states, and she loved to shop. The warrior and woman of God was a member of Greater Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church for over 50 years, she served on the usher board and was honored as the Senior of the Month in April of 2010. She loved and believed in the Lord; her biggest strength was the ability to Give before Receiving. Edith had a beautiful sense of humor with a loving soul, she was a devoted servant to God, a Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Wife, Mom, Grandmother, God Mother, and most of all, a friend to all of us. Mrs. Ede had a soft voice that spoke volumes of Wisdom and Obedience, she was a Praying Mother who taught us the power of Provision. She was an Uber driver before Uber was thought of, she was a Grandmother who made it a priority to be at school plays, games, graduations and even pickups. Rain, Sleet, Snow, early morning, or graveyard shift, Mrs. Ede would watch over the children of young parents while they worked or were in school, without seeking return in service. She was a true Big Momma, you knew you were in trouble if Mrs. Ede with her gray eyes, gave you that piercing stare and pointed finger, lol. We will miss her southern dinners and desserts, especially her Banana pudding, Sweet Potato pie, Cornbread stuffing and Tuna casserole. Edith was predeceased by her late Husband James Lee Gibson (2022), her oldest Son, Keith E. Smith (1994) (Hon. Daughter In-Law Sandra Coney (2009)). Two sisters: Daisy Bell Riley, of Hardeeville, SC., and Vera “Bea” Saxon, of Hardeeville, SC. Three brothers: James Reed (living Sister In-Law Sadie) of Hardeeville, SC. Elliott Keys, of Hardeeville, SC., and Charles “Bubba” Saxon of Hardeeville, SC. She leaves behind to cherish her memory and love, her Son, James L. Smith (Daughter In-Law, Deborah) of Bridgeport, CT., two Stepdaughters: Vernessa Holland, of Richmond, VA., Wanda Gibson, of NC. Eight Grandchildren: Keith E. Smith Jr. of Kissimmee, FL., James L. Smith Jr. of Norwalk, CT., Shakiah S. Smith and Shiann C. Smith of Stamford CT., Shaquanda L. Corbett of Middletown, CT., Johnnie R. Bunch III of Mass., Ansen J. Bunch and KaNia S. Smith of Bridgeport, CT. Eight Great Grandchildren and One Great, Great, Grandchild. Amen to that. Brothers and Sisters: Henry Saxon, of NC, John H. Jenkins, of CA., Molcy Haynes, of SC., Phoebe Jones, of Stamford, CT., Helen M. Ford, of Stamford, CT., Laurence H. Ford (Sister In-Law Jane), of Shiloh, GA., and Susie Green, of Stamford, CT. The Snell and Smith family of Stamford and Norwalk, CT. A devoted Niece: Yolanda Ford of Bridgeport, CT, God daughter and children: Charmaine Nelson of FL, Lynton Nelson of Bridgeport, CT, Osiba Nelson (Dayo) of Trumbull, CT, Uhuru Nelson of Bridgeport, CT. Edith will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Edith and family would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to those who God placed in Mrs. Ede’s life for a season of care, her Grandchildren, Brothers & Sisters, Nieces: Idella Ford and Melissa Green, of Stamford, CT., Yolanda Ford, of Bridgeport, CT., Devin Smith of Stamford, CT., In-Law, Vonda K. Robinson, of Stamford, CT., and Nurse Advisor, Nitra Oliver-White, of Bridgeport, CT, and the Greater Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church family. Visitation will be held on Wednesday September 13, 2023 from 5:00PM - 6:00PM followed by a service of celebration at 6:00PM at Greater Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church, 27 Baxter Avenue, Stamford, CT. Interment will be private.
